MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Middle School is comprised of grades 5-8. Students change classes and have different teachers for their academic core and electives. Each student has a hall locker to store his/her materials.

The Middle School day begins at 8:15 with all middle school students coming together as a community for morning devotions. Adam Worley, Middle School Director, takes real life problems and shows students how they can be addressed biblically. Core classes begin at 8:35 and conclude at 1:00. The afternoon is reserved for elective classes, service learning (Wednesdays) and mini-electives (Fridays).

Core classes: Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies. Enrichment classes: Computer Science (Mondays), Spanish (Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays), Art (two classes per week), Music (two classes per week) and Physical Education (three days per week).

Math. There are two math tracks: standard and advanced. Students are placed in math on the basis of screening tests, classroom performance and standardized test results.

Advanced track: 5th grade (Advanced Math), 6th grade (Pre-Algebra), 7th grade (Algebra I) and 8th grade (Geometry). Geometry will be first offered in the 2009-2010 academic year.

Standard track: 5th grade (Math), 6th grade (Advanced Math), 7th grade (Pre-Algebra) and 8th grade (Algebra I).

Mini-electives: There are generally 4 mini-electives offered each quarter. Students select from the list of course offerings in August. The following mini-electives were offered during 2007-2008:

1st Quarter: Yoga, Digital Photography and Geology
2nd Quarter: Foods, Basketball, Chess, Adv. Art
3rd Quarter: Knitting, Wrestling, $ Cents, Recycling
4th Quarter: Digital Photography, Outdoor Adventures, Sewing

Athletics Program: The Kingrey Center which houses a new gym and performing arts center will be utilized by the school and Meeting community beginning with the 2008 – 09 academic year. High Point Friends School has joined the ISL Conference and will participate in the following sports: soccer, flag football, volleyball, basketball and cross country. Co-ed teams are open to students in grades 5 – 8. Other conference schools are: B’Nai Shalom, Greensboro Montessori, Guilford Day and New Garden Friends.

The Kingrey Center has two rock climbing walls: one 28’ in height for older students and one 8’ in height for younger students. An after school rock climbing club is available for middle schoolers. Younger students have access to their wall during regularly scheduled physical education classes.
