High Point Friends’ recent middle school addition is an emerging program that develops lifelong cooperative and team-building skills. Unique to the area, the program’s focus is to get students out of the classroom and into the world. Nurturing each student’s exploratory nature, students are encouraged to question, to develop hypotheses and to integrate learning through hands-on activities, field trips and community service projects which foster a sense of discovery.
The Middle School is located on the lower level of the Honbarrier Education Center. Five classrooms, a computer lab, science lab and art room are provided for students in grades 5 – 8.
With the completion of the gymnasium scheduled during the 2007 – 2008 school year, the school plans to begin an athletic program based upon the needs and interests of the Middle School student body. The gym will be high school sized and will have a basketball court, volleyball court, wrestling facilities and a climbing wall.
Each morning begins with all Middle Schoolers assembled together for a silent period of “Centering” followed by a devotional or character education activity. Students then have four academic core classes daily (literature-based Language Arts, Math (regular or accelerated), social studies and science. In addition to the core classes, students have physical education daily, art twice a week and Spanish three times per week. Special interest Mini-electives are offered are Fridays. Students choose one Mini-elective per quarter. Topics such as backpacking, hiking, nature lore, Bible Study, French Cooking, Broadway musicals, basketball, volleyball, rock wall climbing, etc. are available depending upon student interest. On Wednesday afternoons, students have no elective classes and participate in service learning activities.
